Description
The skeleton of Brighton’s West Pier stands in a calm sea, with the city’s seafront stretching out behind it. Opened in 1866 and closed to the public in 1975, the Grade I listed pier was ravaged by storms and fires, leaving the rusting ironwork and weathered timber posts seen here. Behind it, the slender Brighton i360 rises 162 metres above the beach, a modern counterpoint to the ruin. Beyond the shingle sit the Regency terraces, hotels and apartment blocks of Brighton and Hove, all under a soft overcast sky.
This view from out over the water captures the pier as few people see it: stranded, quiet and quietly beautiful, a much-loved symbol of the city’s seaside heritage.
Available as a fine art print.
